Do Wax Melts Evaporate?

AMA Lifestyle 010 1 e1627398383307

Wax melts are a fun and experimental way to introduce fragrance into your home. Some of the questions we are frequently asked are:

“When should I change my wax melt?”

“Why doesn’t my wax melt disappear as it melts?”

“Why does candle wax evaporate and wax melts don’t?”

So let’s dive into the science behind wax melting…

Why don’t wax melts evaporate like candles do?

Although both candles and wax melts require heat to release their fragrance, wax melts differ in the sense that they do not need to be physically lit (they are wickless). They only require heat from either a tea light or an electric burner. In contrast, candles have a burning wick and the wax is heated directly.

Consequently, wax melts do not come into direct contact with the flame, the wax does not get hot enough to evaporate and only the scent is released. The temperature of a burning candle is high enough to evaporate both the wax and scent.

When should I change my wax melt?

You may notice clear smoke rising from the top of a wax melt when heated. The clear smoke is the scent being released and emitted around the room. When the clear smoke has dispersed and you can no longer smell the fragrance, it’s time to clean out your burner and use a fresh wax melt.-
